CAPELINHOS project information
The footage of the Capelinhos Volcano was taken in 1957 by Alzira Neves Simas. Capelinhos erupted off the coast of the island of Faial (Azores, Portugal) in September 1957 and remained active until October 1958. We were living on the neighboring island of Pico when my mother went to Faial to document the volcano on an 8mm home movie camera.
Embodiment, whether a physical gesture in paint, a scratch on a piece of film, or the glitches that happen when video is being transferred or copied, involves time, accident and the hand - human, mechanical or digital. When I began making hand-developed 8mm movies in 1989 the cut and paste (montage) aspect of editing made perfect sense because I was already working in collage. Both are ways of exploring the relativity of images, where meaning is not fixed in one image or another but exists at their juncture. In The Cinema Effect, Sean Cubitt calls that juncture the zero of "pure relationality." (p.34) Kandinsky writes of the point which “equals zero” and “forms a bridge…” (Point, Line to Plane, p.25)

A minha mãe gostava de arquivar coisas, uma tendência que eu herdei. Em Setembro de 1957, chegamos da Califórnia para uma visita de um ano ao Pico e ela fez filmagens para documentar essa viagem, que coincidiu com o ano de actividade do Vulcão dos Capelinhos. Eu tinha 4 anos e estávamos a viver na costa norte do Pico, mas juro que podia ouvir o vulcão entre as cantigas e as risadas nas festas e matanças.
Estas imagens num filme velho desvanecido e riscado são, para mim, irresistíveis. Sou uma artista abstrata há vinte anos e, como tal, estou principalment interessada na "marca" física, o que me leva, naturalmente, a apreciar a deterioração física destas películas. Há vários anos que tenho "escavado" este filme - tranferindo-o para vídeo e integrando nele as minhas próprias filmagens, para criar narativas não-lineares. No dia 8 de Novembro de 2004 (dia das eleições nacionais nos Estados Unidos, onde vivo), senti que precisava afastar-me do Abstrato e aproximar-me de imagens reconhecíveis, e comecei a minha primeira pintura do volcão, a que dei o título de História. Depois foi uma série de quadros e vídeos - todos inspirados pelos filmes de 1957 da minha mãe - concluindo com uma segunda pintura do volcão, desta vez com o título Geografia.
